Attack / forced disappearance

The International Secretariat of OMCT has reqests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Sudan.

Brief description of the situation

The International Secretariat of OMCT has been informed by the Sudan Organisation Against Torture (SOAT), a member of the OMCT network, that on 4th December 2005, armed militias, reportedly the Janjaweed, attacked three internally displaced persons (IDPs), from Kalma IDP camp, Nyala, Southern Darfur State. The names of the victims are:

1. Mrs. Mona Ibrahim Salih (22 yrs old), Fur Tribe;
2. Mrs. Fatouma Aldouma Mohamed (35 yrs old), Fur Tribe, sustained injuries to her face and arms;
3. Mr. Abdella Adam Salih (36 yrs old), Fur Tribe, sustained wounds on his back.

According to the information received they were flogged all over their body and beaten on their heads, backs and arms with the butt of guns. One female IDP, Mona Ibrahim Salih, was abducted.

Fatouma Aldouma Mohamed and Abdella Adam Salih are receiving medical treatment at SOAT partner organisation, Amel Centre for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture in Nyala. The whereabouts of Mona Ibrahim Salih is unknown.

Requested Action:

Please write to the authorities in Sudan urging them to:

i. guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Mrs. Mona Ibrahim Salih, Mrs. Fatouma Aldouma Mohamed and Mr. Abdella Adam Salih;
ii. Immediately locate the whereabouts of Mrs. Mona Ibrahim Salih and guarantee her physical and psychological integrity;
iii. order a thorough and impartial investigation into these events in order to identify those responsible, bring them to trial and apply to them the civil, penal and/or administrative sanctions provided by law;
iv. guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international humanitarian law and human rights standards.
